SODEX Mobile Clinic Brings Free Family Planning to Communities Across Luzon
Since its launch in May 2024, the country’s first family planning ambulatory clinic has taken safe, modern contraception to Filipinos who need it most.
Access to family planning should not depend on how far someone lives from a clinic. That belief is behind the Service Outreach and Distribution Extension (SODEX) Program Mobile Clinic of DKT Philippines Foundation, which has been bringing free family planning services directly to communities across Luzon since May 2024.
The SODEX Mobile Clinic was the first ambulatory clinic of its kind in the Philippines. It was built to close the gap between Filipinos who want to space or limit their pregnancies and the uneven availability of family planning services, especially in far-flung and underserved areas. It strengthens the Foundation’s SODEX Program and supports the Department of Health’s 8-Point Action Agenda and National Objectives for Health.
Services:
The clinic offers a full range of modern family planning methods at no cost:
- No-scalpel vasectomy (NSV)
- Bilateral tubal ligation (BTL) using local anesthesia
- IUD insertion
- Two-rod implant insertion
- Consultations
- Pills, injectables, and condoms
Every client goes through counseling and a final screening before receiving any method, so each person is well-informed and a good fit for the service they choose.
A clinic on the road
The mobile clinic began its tour in Binangonan, Rizal, where demand for family planning services is high. Its route covers Central Luzon, North Luzon, the Cordillera region, MIMAROPA, and CALABARZON. Countless communities have already been touched by the clinic, and many people have received care close to home that they might otherwise have gone without.
On board are healthcare professionals and our DKT Philiippines Foundation surgeon, Dr. Luis M. Garcia, trained in BTL, NSV, IUD, and implant services, along with family planning-trained midwives, circulating staff, and a driver.
“DKT Philippines Foundation’s mission is to provide couples with affordable and safe options for family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention through dynamic social marketing,” said Loida Almendares, the Foundation’s Director of Programs. “The SODEX mobile clinic will provide a wide array of free family planning services especially in areas with lesser access to services like the geographically isolated or socially disadvantaged areas. The mobile clinic will bring the services closer to the people and meet them where they are.”
